As parents, we always want the best for our babies. But finding out what is really Sure, it can feel overwhelming, confusing and, frankly, a little gross. From misleading labels to hidden toxins, the world of baby products isn’t always as clean as we think or should be.
That’s why this sequence of Chick Chat delves deep into the truth behind baby products, what parents should really pay attention to, and how to choose items that are safe, non-toxic, and actually good for your little one.
As our guest there is someone who always means business: Arin Schultz, Chief Growth Officer of NaturepedicFather of four boys and one of my favorite people to talk to about these things. If you’re a long-time listener, you might remember him Episode 124 (Our deep dive into potty training!).

This time we uncover the dirty side of baby products and show how we can choose safer products for our babies.
Why this conversation is important
Babies spend more time sleeping, breathing, and touching their surroundings than any other age group, and the same goes for their developing bodies far more susceptible to chemicals such as:
- VOCs
- Flame retardants
- formaldehyde
- Polyurethane foam
- PVC/Vinyl
- synthetic latex
- chemical adhesives
Many of them are often found in children’s room furniture, Cot mattresses, Beddingand everyday objects labeled “environmentally friendly” or “natural.”
We firmly believe that parents deserve to know what is real and what is “greenwashed.”
What we covered in this episode
1. Hidden toxins in baby products (which shocked Arin the most).)
Arin shares what he’s learned after nearly a decade in the organic mattress industry, including the shocking chemicals allowed in traditional crib mattresses and children’s furniture, and how easy it is for companies to mislead parents.
2. Greenwashing: phrases and fake certifications that actually mean nothing
We break down common marketing claims like:
- “environmentally friendly”
- “Green”
- “vegetable”
- “natural mixture”
- “Bamboo” (spoiler: it’s usually viscose)
- “Organic cotton cover” (while the inside is full of trash)
Arin reveals which labels are really important so you know what to look for.
3. “It’s just a mattress”… or is it?

Most babies spend 12-16 hours a day on their crib mattress, breathing in the material it is made of. Mattresses are also included largest Sources of air pollution in the house! This is why choosing a truly organic, non-toxic mattress is important.
4. What “Organic” Means in the Mattress World (and What Companies Get Away With)
Arin explains the difference between:
- GOTS certified organic mattresses
- GREENGUARD Gold (what it means and what it doesn’t mean)
- EEC tested
- Made Safe certification
- Mattresses that are technically “low VOC” but still contain toxic core materials
5. Myth-busting with Arin
We challenge common beliefs, including:
- “All crib mattresses in the United States are safe.”
- “You don’t need organic if you have a mattress protector.”
- “Flame retardants are required by law.”
- “Firm = uncomfortable.”
- “Mattresses no longer offgas once they are opened.”
His answers? So good.
6. Budget-Conscious Parents: Where to Start?
We know that not everyone can buy everything organic. And you should know that you don’t have to buy a completely organic nursery. In this episode we talk about:
- How to prioritize purchases
- What matters most to your baby’s health
- Which swaps have the greatest impact?
7. True or Toxic?
I did a quick run through of popular baby items with Arin:
- Foam play mats
- “Bamboo” cheat sheet.
- Silicone baby products
- Memory Foam Pillow for Toddlers
- waterproof protectors
- MDF furniture
Arin tells us what we really need to know.
8. Parenting wins…and fails
And just for fun, Arin talks about his favorite father’s victory – and his failure. (I think many of us can relate.)

Final thoughts
As parents, we always do our best with the information available to us. Once you understand what’s actually in the products your baby touches, sleeps, and breathes on (and how it can affect them), the path forward becomes much clearer.
Cheers to better knowledge, better choices and easier rest.
